I'm a little slower than normal this month as I took on a few outside jobs and they are taking more time - day and night- than I had anticipated..
I bought this secretary off craigslist way over a year ago- showed it to ya'll then- and just never got around to doing anything with it.. The oak went well with my guest room bed , so thats where its been sitting waiting for the "oh so lovely" redo I promised it when it first arrived.. Thats the good thing about inanimate objects- they have Paitience and are willing to wait without complaining..
well if I do- that'll have to wait and be my April project..
Here is a photo of her in her present state. As you see I made some notes of what I am considering right beside her picture.. NOW, if any of ya have any scathingly brilliant ideas about how I should refinish her- please let me know in your comment.
I plan to go looking for samples of secretaries that have been painted later this evening. Surely they have some on Houzz or Pinterest for me to look at.
I can make my own caulk type paint so no problem there.. I like the look of distressed as long as its done with a Light Touch:) I see so much that goes from distressed to destroyed in a Nano second and thats definatly NOT the look I'm going for..
I just wanted to let ya'll know what I was up to as well as get any advice you'd be willing to share .
Thanks for stopping by.. You are always welcome here and much appreciated.
xoxo
Sonny
Sonny I am the Queen of Still-To-Do Projects. But I think when you get this piece finished its gonna be beautiful b/c it already has such lovely lines. I had to laugh about your comment about going from distressed to destroyed. I have seen some posts where I wanna say "No, please, stop right there. Please stop." :) I can't wait to see your finished project. And by the way, one of the prettiest bedrooms I have ever seen was using a secretary similar to this, both pieces, as a night stand. She had even attached a small swing arm lamp to the side of the hutch. I know that sounds strange but it was really pretty, and she left the desk part open to set her books, clock, etc. Just a thought.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm no good at painting. So it would overwhelm me at the mere thought! Can't wait to see what you do.
ReplyDeleteBrenda
Looking forward to seeing your after!
ReplyDeleteSonny- That is a really great looking piece! I love it and can't wait to see it finished. Is it Amy @ Maison Decor that has a similar one...not sure. The one I am thinking of is painted white and has a soft color on the interior of the hutch part....and it is very gently distressed. I am with you- I like LIGHT distressing but not something distressed so much that it looks "dirty" to me. I think I am probably in the minority! xo Diana
ReplyDeleteHi Sonny. Both the bed and the secretary are beautiful as they are so I can see why you might hesitate to paint them. I can't wait to see what you decide. I am sure they will be beautiful now matter which way you end up going.

I love this piece, Sonny, and I am sure you are going to do a wonderful job on it! Your bed is very similar to mine and I would love to paint it a soft gray, but hubby would kill me! Men like their wood!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see your finished projects! :)
XO,
Jane
Sonny, I love that secretary! I'm sure whatever you decide to do with it, it will be gorgeous!! Enjoy your day, Gail
ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty secretary Sonny it will look gorgeous painted! Can't wait to see what you do.
ReplyDeleteI have painted a few pieces of furniture in my home and don't do heavy distressing either. I'm afraid to really mess it up! I like the idea of you repainting that though. It's so popular right now, so you really can't go wrong.
ReplyDeleteI have a large Things to Do List!
ReplyDeleteI love the secretary. It will be wonderful whatever you decide.
What other colors are you doing in your room, Sonny? White would be easy enough to go with everything, but this might be a good piece to do a color on. Go crazy, girl!
ReplyDeleteHmmm, if it were me I'd paint them black with a little bit of distressing, I'd do the inside in a white and black pattern but I'd keep the hardware on it, beautiful white bedspread and black and white pillows! Hope this helped, both pieces are gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteLooks like an exciting project! I can't wait to see the final result!
ReplyDeleteThat will be beautiful when it's done!! You always turn out the best furniture. I know what you mean about the distressing. Steve and I are working on a black chair - trying to soften it and tone down the heaviness of the black. We had to do major sanding of black paint and not so about the look as we finish it. Sometimes plan B is better than plan A.
ReplyDeleteWow! That's a tough call. I am sure which ever you choose will be done beautifully. I am sooo with you on the light distressing. I always end up painting furniture and not distressing because I know in my house it will get distressed soon enough. LOL! Can't wait to see the final results!
ReplyDeleteOH Sonny I can't wait to see what you do with her.
ReplyDeleteHave a great one.
I DO remember that secretary Sonny. Can't wait to see you do your magic on it!
ReplyDeleteSonny, it is gorgeous! Does it look as great close up as it does from my view? I can see it painted either white or black or maybe a spring green shade. Good luck..you will do what is best for your enjoyment of it. Helen
ReplyDeleteDid you mention if you were keeping the same bed clothes in this room then?
ReplyDeleteIf so I like the idea above of doing a sagey cottage green?
If you are going for the hottest French Country look and are lighting things up I would think a light grey or white would be incredible. But I would paint it all if you (obviously) have the talent for doing. I dream of having it but so far am a big lazy chicken!
Black is something I love to but I tend to enjoy black with beiges and rather than black with whites.
It is an awesome piece and I can't wait to see what you decide to do and for its b ig reveal!
Pop on over and see me sometime.
Have a great remainder of weekend!
